The rumours were true. This Brooklyn icon is coming down.

The Kentile Floors sign is a Brooklyn landmark located in the Gowanus neighborhood. It’s a highly visible and cherished icon in the local community. Because the sign’s perfect visibility from the F and G trains it is well known by the thousands of commuters that travel from South Brooklyn into Manhattan every day and has in recent times become a popular photo subject in social media with thousands of images tagged with #kentile #dailykentile #kentilefloors.
The company ceased operation in 1992 after almost 100 years in business (1898 – 1992). Kentile Floors was an industry leader in the manufacturing of super resilient floor tiles for both commercial and residential use.
Asbestos litigations marked the end of an era for Kentile Floors and eventually pushed the company into filing for bankruptcy in 1992.
